Our top Ocracoke rental home booking tips and tricks:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is high season in Ocracoke. To find the best value, change your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer pleasant weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property management companies usually offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Many management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guides which will include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to select the best rental in the Ocracoke area:

  • Select your dates and budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Stranded On Purpose \"Bluebird Day Too\": Spacious dog friendly with a pool table has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before you book the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your vacation.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, property owners charge additional pet fees.
  • Does your group require particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental

Advice for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. Put the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few problems.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Document any issues with the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your life at home. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent reviews to drive more bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your experience find their best vacation home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
