Tricks and tips for getting the perfect Ocracoke vacation home experience:

Get the best value:

  • The sooner your group can book, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked early. Booking your vacation rental up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
  • Summer time is high season in the Ocracoke area. Booking your vacation home in the Spring or Fall is an excellent way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property management companies usually offer guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Many rental management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guide magazines which include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to select the best vacation rental in the Ocracoke area:

  • Choose your vacation dates and maximum budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your group needs. William's Villa: Spacious centrally located condo, cathedral ceilings has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often accessible online. Otherwise, contact the host before you reserve your rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • Some properties allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • Is your group looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the host's contact information to your smartphone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of difficulties.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • During arrival, make note of any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Double-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a wonderful time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
