Tricks and tips for getting the perfect Ocracoke vacation property experience:
How to get the best rental home value:
- Summer months are high season in Ocracoke. Book your vacation in Fall or Spring to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts and property managers offer special rates for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family.
- Booking websites often offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitor guides which often include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Selecting and booking the right Ocracoke rental home:
- To start, have your group decide on trip dates and a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration you need. The Breeze - Beautiful home tucked away on a quiet street in Wehab Village has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is often accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the property manager before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out what bed configuration is suitable for your group.
- Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or costs could be applied to your invoice.
Additional considerations:
- Add the property manager's contact info to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Upon arrival, document any damages to the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all coorespondence.
- Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor. Often, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
- Re-check the property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on great feedback to drive new bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your review find their best rental home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.
