Our top Ocracoke vacation rental home tips and tricks:

How to get the best value:

  • Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. To find the best rental for your budget, we recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • The earlier your group can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best properties are reserved early. Reserving your rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guides have discounts for nearby tours and attractions.

How to choose the best rental in Ocracoke:

  • First, have your family agree to the best dates and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Salamander 2 is a lovely soundfront home with boat docking and sunset views. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is often available online. If not, contact the property owner before reserving the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
  • Is your family looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you must book a pet-friendly rental. Get information on breed, size, and type requirements. Some hosts charge additional pet fees.

Advice for a smooth stay:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
  • Upon arrival, make note of any damages to the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all coorespondence.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are a great source for finding the best local attractions.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let thieves spoil your trip.
  • When it's time to leave, complete a final walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a great time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
