Tricks and tips to get the very best Ocracoke vacation property experience:

Sticking to a rental home budget:

  • Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties.
  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts for veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines contain deals for local tours and attractions.

Choosing the best vacation home in Ocracoke:

  • Start by selecting a vacation week and a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Uncle Milton's House: Pet friendly cottage, close to harbor, marsh views. has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before you book the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke attraction you long to visit, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or applied to your invoice.

During your stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your .
  • Make a record of any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if there is a dispute.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Lock your rental home while you are away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Double-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at departure. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
