Our top Rental home tips and tricks:
How to get the best rental value:
- In the Ocracoke area, The sooner your group can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Reserving your rental home 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in Ocracoke. To get the largest rental within budget, we suggest booking in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular Ocracoke attractions. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
- Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guides have deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Choose a designated group leader, select your trip dates, and choose a max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Sandpiper's Nest: Within walking distance of the harbor, shops and restaurants. has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rentals search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is often accessible on booking websites. If not, call the property management company before you book your rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or costs may be applied to your invoice.
- If there's a certain Ocracoke attraction you are enamored with, keep an eye out for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
More considerations for your visit:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent quite a few difficulties.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would at home.
- At Check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the host. Record all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor. Often, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and scan for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a terrific vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
