Getting the best Ocracoke vacation rental experience:

When to visit Ocracoke & When to reserve a rental home:

  • Summertime is high season in Ocracoke. To get the best value, try changing your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
  • The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
  • Hosts sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your family.
  • Property managers often offer renters an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Often, management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guide magazines which will include special offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Make a plan and pick the bestrental home:

  • Choose vacation week and maximum budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Wild Peony: Incredible views from the ever popular rooftop deck! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before you reserve your rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You'll need to work out what is right for your vacation family.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction or event? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to find a property that allows animals. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Get the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your . Put the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Make a record of any issues with the property at check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are helpful if there is a dispute.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent many difficulties.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to make sure you didn't forget anything. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a wonderful stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
