How to find the best vacation home experience:

When to reserve a Ocracoke rental & When to go:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To find the best value, try changing your group's trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer excellent weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have discounts for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • First, have your group commit to dates and a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Sea No Evil: Dog friendly, family friendly, decks, close to the beach. has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property management company before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out what is right for your vacation.
  • Does your family require particular amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.

During your stay:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
  • To make certain that damages aren't linked to your family's stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas upon your arrival. Make contact with the property manager right away to report your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many problems.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible source for finding the best local attractions.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're gone! Don't let burglars spoil your family vacation.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Hosts rely on great reviews to compel more bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
