Tricks and tips to get the optimal Ocracoke rental home experience:

Getting the most from your rental home budget:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To book the best rental within budget, we suggest booking in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at Ocracoke restaurants, beaches, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The sooner your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are booked early. Reserving your rental property six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your rental home.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your family qualifies for a discount.
  • Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Many rental management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guides which often include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Filter your rental search:

  • Start by selecting vacation dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Sounds Perfect and Secret Cedars: Waterfront. Views of the Lighthouse. has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible online. If they are not listed, reach out to the host before you book the home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out what configuration is suitable for your group.
  • Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or charges may be applied to your contract.

Know before you go:

  • Add the owner's contact info to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • To ensure that no damages are linked to your family's stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas during check in. Speak to the host immediately to report your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of problems.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your peace. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Re-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed everything on check-out day. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental a final time and scan for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent reviews to drive future reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your experience find their best vacation home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
