How to get the best vacation rental experience:

When to book a Ocracoke rental home & When to go:

  • June, July, and August are high season in the Ocracoke area. Booking your Ocracoke vacation rental in Spring or Fall is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier your group can book, the easier your search will be. The best properties are booked early. Reserving your vacation home up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
  • Owners sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Property management companies typically offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Look for your local Ocracoke visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have money saving offers on local tours and attractions.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • First, have your family select trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Lucky Tern - A large pet-friendly home for 8 has 4 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available online. Otherwise, call the property management company before booking your rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction or event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or charges applied to your invoice.

More considerations:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Save the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
  • During arrival, note any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent lots of concerns.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peace. Use the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and places you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Keep the property locked while you're away! Don't let burglars ruin your family vacation.
  • Re-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a great stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
