Tips and Tricks for getting the best vacation home experience:

Find your perfect vacation home:

  • Reserve your Ocracoke vacation home in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies frequently offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides contain discounts for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

How to pick the best rental in Ocracoke:

  • Begin by choosing the best vacation week and a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Doc's Holiday: Dog friendly, reverse floor plan, well appointed. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is normally available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property management company before booking the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out what configuration is right for your family.
  • If there's a certain Ocracoke beach you simply love, browse properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or could be applied to your agreement.

Know before you go:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
  • During arrival, note any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your peaceful home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your rental property while you're out! Don't let thieves spoil your trip.
  • Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, take video of the property to record its condition.
  • Leave a review! Hosts rely on excellent feedback to stimulate more bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your experience find their best rental home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
