Our top Ocracoke rental property booking tips:

Sticking to a rental budget:

  • The sooner your group can book, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation home six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
  • Summer months are high season in Ocracoke. Book your rental home in Fall or Spring months to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Ocracoke visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Filter your search:

  • Choose your dates and budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your group requires. The Mary Francis: Dog friendly, near Springers Point and Lighthouse has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly available on booking websites. If not, contact the property management company before reserving your home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what configuration is optimal for your family.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly rental. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Looking for unique amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few difficulties.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • To ensure that no damages are linked to your stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas upon your arrival. Call the property manager immediately to document any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be an excellent source for finding the best local beaches and restaurants.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed everything at departure. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a great stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
