How to book the best Ocracoke vacation property experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To find the best value, try changing your vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best rental properties are booked early. Booking your vacation property six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Ocracoke area visitor guides which include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Start by having your family agree to date ranges and a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Crows Nest: Dog friendly home, wonderful decking, screened porch. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is normally available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before booking the property. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. .
  • Some rentals allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
  • To ensure that no damages are attributed to your stay, record any problem areas during check in. Speak to the host right away to document any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents a lot of concerns.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your life at home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property a final time and scan for damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a fantastic vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
