How to find the best Ocracoke rental home experience:

Get the most from your spending budget:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is high season in the Ocracoke area. To find the largest rental home within your budget, we recommend reserving in Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite Ocracoke restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
  • Some property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Property managers frequently offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Many management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guides which will include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Start by having your group choose the best dates and a budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Purple Martin: Old fashioned, quaint. Rooftop deck view of Lighthouse. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is normally accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before reserving your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You'll need to work out what configuration is suitable for your vacation family.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or charges might be applied to your agreement.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke destination you long to visit, browse rentals that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

During your stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
  • Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Note any damages to the property during check in, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property management company was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
