Rental property booking tips:

When to visit Ocracoke & When to book:

  • The sooner your group can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Ocracoke area. Booking a rental in the Spring or Fall is our best tip for saving money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites frequently offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Often, management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guides which often include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Planning, picking, and booking the best Ocracoke rental home:

  • Choose your dates and maximum budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Mermaid Manor: Contemporary spacious home, decks and screened porches has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke vacation rental search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available online. Otherwise, call the property owner before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you must book a pet-friendly property. Get information on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, property managers charge additional pet fees.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke attraction you are crazy about, keep an eye out for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental

Advice for a terrific stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Document any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome visitors bothering your peaceful home life. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • On check-out day, complete a walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the host is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a fantastic stay? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
