Getting the best vacation home experience:

When to visit Ocracoke & When to book:

  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier you can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked early. Booking your vacation property 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
  • Reserve your Ocracoke vacation in the Fall or Spring to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines contain money saving offers on local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Narrow your Search:

  • Choose vacation dates and max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Reflections: Canal front home, beautiful marsh views. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is almost always accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before you reserve your home. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to work out what is optimal for your group.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or costs applied to your agreement.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke destination you crave, browse homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Add the property manager's contact information to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of concerns.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are away, just like you would at home.
  • To make sure no damages are linked to your family's stay, inspect the property for any problem areas during arrival. E-mail the rental manager immediately to report any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Be a good neighbor. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take video of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent reviews to inspire new reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your review find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
