Tips to get the best vacation property experience:

Finding the best rental home value:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Reserving a rental home in Fall or Spring is an excellent way to save on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • Property managers sometimes offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Often, property management companies supply Ocracoke area visitor guide magazines that include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Choose a group leader, select your dates, and choose a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Mary Fisher: Tucked away on a one-way street, near Springer's Point. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is commonly accessible online. If you don't see them listed, call the property management company before booking your home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out what configuration is suitable for your vacation group.
  • Some properties allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • If there's a particular Ocracoke attraction you long to visit, search for homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

More considerations:

  • We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are away, just like you would at home.
  • Document any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers bothering your peaceful home life. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and places you would have never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually help. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a excellent vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
