Strategies to get the best rental experience:
Money saving strategies:
- Summer is high season in Ocracoke. To find the largest vacation home within your budget, we highly recommend reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at Ocracoke restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Booking websites usually offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guides have coupons for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Choosing the best rental home in the Ocracoke area:
- First and foremost, have your group agree to a vacation week and a budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Captain Reid's Devereux: Great getaway for two has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Ocracoke rental home search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property manager before you book the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- If there's a certain Ocracoke attraction you are crazy about, look for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. .
- If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
Advice for a fantastic stay:
- Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
- Make a record of any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if a dispute is filed.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers bothering your peace. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would back home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all belongings. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on good ratings to stimulate more bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your review find their best vacation home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
