Our top Ocracoke rental property booking tips and tricks:

Cost saving strategies:

  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier you can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
  • To book the largest rental home for your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Ocracoke vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites typically offer customers an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Ocracoke area travel guides which will include special deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what is right for your group.
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or costs applied to your invoice.
  • If there's a specific Ocracoke destination you crave, look for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before booking

  • Lock your rental home while you are out. Protect your property!
  • To make certain that damages aren't linked to your family's stay, make note of any problem areas during arrival. Call the rental manager right away to relay any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be respectful. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • On check-out day, complete a final walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and look for damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a excellent stay? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
