How to book the best Ocracoke rental home experience:

Sticking to your spending plan:

  • Summertime is high season in the Ocracoke area. To find the largest vacation home for your budget, we suggest booking in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at popular Ocracoke attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
  • In the Ocracoke area, The earlier your group can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are reserved very early. Booking your vacation home up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Often, property management companies supply Ocracoke area visitors guides which will include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Ocracoke visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Selecting the perfect rental in Ocracoke:

  • Select a designated group leader, select your dates, and choose a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Teacher's Lair: Beautiful waterfront home on a canal in Oyster Creek has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible on booking pages. If not, call the property management company before you book your home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Does your family require unique amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .
  • Some properties allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.

Some things to know before you go:

  • We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Document any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, stereo or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of issues.
  • Be respectful. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, take pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent ratings to drive future bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
