Reformed, with a steady job as a popular host to over
25,000 cyber-travelers annually, Blackbeard once again
received a "pardon" of sorts --this time in the form of
a resolution by the Hyde Co., NC Board of Commissioners
officially recognizing his web site as "
The Original
Blackbeard Website" on August 4, 1997.Margie Brooks, Hyde Co Director of Tourism, noted that "We've been keeping a close eye on the ol' boy since he re-appeared in his favorite haunts of Ocracoke Island and Bath in October '96. That was almost six months before he regained international attention by the announcement of the possible discovery of his flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge, off Beaufort in March, 1997. We thought he was settling down for the quiet life, but he gets bored --we should have known." Well before his newfound stardom, it was obvious that Blackbeard was a changed man --keeping good (cyber)company with the likes of The Lost Colony, The Elizabethan Gardens, Fort Macon, the North Carolina Aquariums --to name but a few of his neighbors. "He was willing to do community service work for the communities he had terrorized in the past --we put him to work; 24 hrs a day - 7 days a week," said Brooks. He has been faithful in his job, never missing a day. He's now the favorite of many, many schools (who have requested to use the site as a teaching resource) and tourists alike...hosting over 2,250 visitors per month. Pay him a visit, he's sure to show you a close-up picture of the bronze bell recently recovered from Beaufort Inlet. Or, perhaps he'll tell a tale or two. |
